The surface is a coral fleece pile, which is the same material as a good throw blanket. It reads soft and slightly velvety underfoot rather than fluffy, and because the pile is short it sits flat, slides under a door, and takes furniture without crushing.

There is a non slip backing, so it holds position on hard floors without a separate rug pad, and the whole thing is machine washable.
